Good Trouble: Obedience Is the First Step

October 23, 2022 | John Durham

Let me catch you up. I KINGS 17.
-      Elijah appears on the scene out of nowhere V17:1
-      God, in 2-7, comes to Elijah and tells him to go live by the brook Kerith,
-      Right as the creek is dried upthe word of the Lord comes to Elijah, and moves him to Zarephath 8-16.
-      The widow’s son dies, and Elijah brings him back to life, 17-24

I KINGS 18:1-4 GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF HIS PEOPLE, THROUGH ALL SORTS OF MEANS.
I KINGS 18:5-14  OBEDIENCE YESTERDAY DOESN’T FREE YOU FOR DISOBEDIENCE TODAY.
I KINGS 18:14-16  OBEY ON THE FIRST STEP OR YOU’LL ALWAYS WORRY ABOUT THE SECOND ONE

3 things here that you can apply to your life this week.
Fight for Faithfulness. Obadiah had everything to lose and nothing to gain (as compared to the widow had nothing to lose and everything to gain).  God’s will for you is not your safety nor comfort, it’s your faithfulness to Him no matter the cost or outcome.
Prepare for temptation. There is always temptation to walk the fine line between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world.
Live Boldly Obadiah eventually came to a place where he said yes Lord!

Spurgeon: In the center of rebellion against God there was one whose devotion to God was intense. As it is horrible to find a Judas among the apostles, so it is grand to discover an Obadiah among Ahab's royal court. What grace must have been at work to maintain such a fire in the midst of the sea, such godliness in the midst of vile iniquity!
